21 Nov 2011    DNSSEC - .nz signed zone published with obscured keys
18 Nov 2011    DNSSEC - First Key Generation
28 Oct 2011    From the .NZ October 2011 Newsletter - DNSSEC Dates

DNSSEC

The Production Readiness testing of DNSSEC has been completed and we are ready to begin deployment. Lateral Security has provided us with the Key Generation Procedure auditing report, detecting only minor issues. Changes have been made to resolve these issues. The report will soon be published on our website.

Detailed below are the dates for deployment of DNSSEC for the .nz zone.

Date Task Description
22-May-11 SRS began accepting DS records Both SRS and EPP interfaces are capable of receiving DS records for the third level domains. Those records won't be published until the corresponding second level domain is signed

18-Nov-11

Key Generation The keys needed to sign the .nz zone and the second level zones will be generated according to procedure. This will be a once-a-year task.
21-Nov-11 signed .nz zone is published with obscured keys The .nz nameservers will start serving a signed version of the .nz zone, but with the DNSKEY records obfuscated to prevent their use as trust anchors.
Nov-11 Deployment results are analyzed and decision to submit DS record to the root is taken Over the next two weeks, we will be analyzing the behaviour of the system while serving a signed zone. This will enable us to determine if it's safe to proceed with the DNSSEC deployment schedule.
9-Dec-11 DNSKEY records for .nz are unobscured The obfuscation of DNSKEY records in the .nz zone will be reverted, making their real content visible in the zone. It's not advisable to use them as trust anchors.
9-Dec-11 DS records for .nz are submitted to the root NZRS requests a change to the Root Zone Management to add the DS records for the .nz zone.
16-Dec-11 .nz DS records are published in the root zone If all the checks pass, the Root Zone Management should make the changes requested visible around this date

The most recent version of the DNSSEC Practice Statement for .nz, is Version 1.2. No further issues have been raised by the community.

If you have any questions, please contact Dave or Sebastian on support@nzrs.net.nz

23 Sep 2011    SRS CA Certificate Expiry

The SRS CA certificate in the current RIK is due to expire on 30/09/2011. It has been extended by 2 years and is available in the new SRS RIK 5.15.
If you are using the current SRS CA certificate to validate the SRS SSL certificate, then you must upgrade to the new SRS CA certificate provided in the SRS RIK 5.15.
If you are using the RIK Clients to communicate with the SRS, then you must upgrade to the new RIK or replace the SRS CA certificate with the SRS CA certificate provided in the SRS RIK 5.15.

23 Sep 2011    DNSSEC - Key Generation Procedure review
11 Aug 2011    DNSSEC Practice Statement for .nz, Version 1.2

Version 1.2 of the DNSSEC Practice Statement is available at http://www.nzrs.net.nz/dns/dnssec/dps

The changes between Version 1.1 and Version 1.2 are posted at http://www.nzrs.net.nz/dns/dnssec/dps/history and also includes the
previous versions in PDF format.

The main changes in this new version are as follows:

1. Multi-Person mode for the Keystore activities
Due to limitations in the HSM device that we are using, we have had to reduce the minimum number of Keystore Security officers required for key related activities from three to two.
The maximum number of Keystore Security officers has also been reduced from nine to five. So for the backup and restoration of key material we will require three people (two Keystore Security officers and one System Administrator).

2. Site Controls
Posters to this list highlighted some issues regarding rack security and access controls. We agree that this area needs to be improved and we will review and make changes to this area over the next few months.

3. Trusted Roles and Trusted Individuals
We have reworked this section and clarified the roles of the Keystore Security Officers, System Administrators, Device Security Officers and Witness and specified the numbers required. We have also introduced a new role: Key Generation Administrator.

4. Background Checks
We have made it clear that the checks apply to anyone with a trusted role and NZRS would then decide on a case by case basis if the individual considered for a trusted role is suitable or not.

We hope that with this new version we have answered your concerns and questions that you have with our DPS document.

If anybody has any outstanding issues or concerns with the DPS please let us know as soon as possible as we are getting close to the stage where we are ready to begin our DNSSEC implementation.

If there are any issues, we suggest that the best way to address them would be to hold a meeting at NZRS to discuss them and to have the meeting sometime over the next two weeks. If anybody would like to meet with us and discuss the DPS, then please let us know by Wednesday 17th August.

01 Jul 2011    DNSSEC Practice Statement for .nz, Version 1.1

After weeks of work discussing and addressing the concerns our
community have raised about the DNSSEC Practice Statement for .nz,
we'd like to present a new version of the document.

Version 1.1 is available at http://www.nzrs.net.nz/dns/dnssec/dps
The changes between Version 1.0 and Version 1.1 are posted at
http://www.nzrs.net.nz/dns/dnssec/dps/history and also includes the
previous version in PDF format.

Minor changes have been made throughout the document.

The following sections have been updated with more information as
requested by the community
1.4. Document Management
4.1. Site Controls
4.3.3. Trusted individuals
4.4.5. Vulnerability assessments
4.6.1. Incident Detection and compromise handling procedures
7.1. Frequency of entity compliance audit

For the following sections we have made changes to our design to address
the concerns raised by the community
6.1. Key lengths and algorithms
4.3.1. Trusted roles
4.3.2. Number of persons required per task

We are still working on the Key Pair Generation procedures and it is our
intention to update that part of the DPS in the coming weeks and to also
publish more technical details on the Key Pair Generation Procedure. The
technical details will be released as a separate document that will also
include details of the scripts used.

The intention of the DPS document is to assist you in determining the
level of trust that you may assign to DNSSEC in the .nz domain and for
you to assess your own risk.

We'd like to encourage discussion around this new version of the
document. Please feel free to ask any questions about the DPS or provide
any suggestions for improvements to the document.

20 May 2011    DNSSEC Status Update, May 2011

During recent weeks, NZRS has achieved several milestones towards the
implementation of DNSSEC in the .nz zone:

DNSSEC High Level Architecture
We have published the "DNSSEC High Level Architecture" document which
describes the technical architecture to be used to sign .nz and the
second level zones.
This document is available on our website

DNSSEC Practice Statement
We have published the "DNSSEC Practice Statement" document, detailing
the practices and operational procedures to be used in the implementation
of DNSSEC for the .nz and second level zones under .nz.
This document is available on our website

SRS Accepts DS Records
Following the SRS release 5.11 on Monday 23 May, the SRS will start to
accept DS records for any domain name, but they will not be included
as zone data until the corresponding parent zone is signed.
A timetable for the signing of the .nz zones is planned for release
by August of this year.

For more details about the SRS changes, you can check the Release Notes.

DNSSEC

We are actively working on the DNSSEC deployment for .nz. We have chosen a signing architecture based on OpenDNSSEC and the Sun Crypto Accelerator 6000 for the Hardware Security Module.

Changes to the SRS system to support DS records have been completed.  This functionality is currently turned off in the production SRS and it will be activated when the DNSSEC deployment begins. The SRS RPS test system is available for registrars that wish to test their interface with DS records.

During March we executed the first pass of DR testing, and now we are preparing for the performance and stress testing, a second pass of End to End testing and system adjustment due to the results of DR testing.

If you have any questions, please contact Dave or Sebastian on support@nzrs.net.nz

EPP

We have deployed a functioning version of the SRS EPP interface to the SRS production system. If there are any registrars that would  like to use the EPP interface on the test or production system then please contact Dave or Manu on support@nzrs.net.nz

RIK Redevelopment Project

The project to update the Registrar Information Kit (RIK) is nearing completion.

In January we completed the first phase of the project with a new release of the RIK in a new package format. This new format provides simplified installation and upgrade processes and support for a greater variety of operating systems, but made no other change to the client software contained in the package.

We are now in the second phase of the project, which is to update the client software we distribute with the RIK.

With version 5.09 of the RIK we are making the following changes:

  1. Introducing the beta release of a new client called sendJSON. This tool accepts a JSON document and outputs the response from the SRS as JSON working in a similar way to sendXML, which uses XML documents
  2. Deprecating the core NativeData library that we distribute in the RIK for working with SRS XML. This library and some utility libraries will be removed in the October 2011 release of the RIK. As far as we are aware, no registrar has used these libraries to create their own SRS XML client and so removing them will have no impact. The full list of libraries to be removed in October is detailed at the end of this notice.
  3. Deprecating the SRSClient client. This will be removed in the October 2011 release of the RIK.
  4. Introducing the beta release of a new client called SRSClient2. This replicates the functionality of SRSClient with some minor differences. NOTE: This client will continue to be provided and supported after the October 2011 release of the RIK but will only provid the same limited set of transactions as the current SRSClient
  5. No changes have been made to the sendXML client.

For detailed information please check the document "RIK changes" available on our website: http://nzrs.net.nz/sites/default/files/RIK_changes_23032011.pdf

RIK Redevelopment Project

This project is currently in progress. The first phase of the project to simplify the installation and upgrading process of the RIK (Registrar Information Kit) has been completed. The second phase to update the SRSClient and the SRS libraries is underway and expected to be completed over the next few months.

During the Maintenance Window on Sunday (30 January 2011) we released the RIK version 5.7. This release introduces a new approach for handling the installation of the dependent CPAN libraries (community Perl modules) required to use the 'sendXML' and 'SRSClient' programs.

Rather than requiring a manual installation of these libraries, a pre-built 'CPAN libs' tarball is now distributed for a set of popular platforms. The tarball for your chosen platform will be required, along with the tarball for the RIK itself.

The installation process should, in most cases, be significantly simpler. Please see the updated INSTALL doc in the RIK for the full installation process. The RIK and 'CPAN' tarballs can be downloaded from the NZRS website http://nzrs.net.nz/srs/rik

This change is designed to be backwards compatible, so if you have already installed the CPAN libraries, you won't have to change anything to upgrade the RIK. However, the old approach of installing libraries manually is now deprecated. We recommend moving to the new approach as soon as possible, as this will result in an easier upgrade path in the future.

The list of currently supported platforms is:

  • Debian Lenny (i386/x64)
  • Ubuntu Lucid (i386/x64)
  • Fedora 14 (i386/x64)
  • OpenSuSE 11.3 (i386/x64)
  • FreeBSD 8.1 (i386)
  • Solaris 10u8 (i386)

Note, the CPAN lib tarballs are tested on the above distribution versions only.

Other platforms may be supported in the future. Please contact us with any specific requirements you may have.

SRS EPP Changes

A beta EPP interface is available for registrar testing. The interface will have a small subset of the EPP functionality. Regular incremental releases with additional functionality will be made to the test system throughout June. If any registrars would like to be involved in testing the EPP interface, please contact Dave or Manuela: support@nzrs.net.nz

IDN

SRS code changes were implemented in the February release and the "Go Live" date scheduled for July.
One of the IDN changes will result in the creation of a new second level domain (SLD) under .nz: māori.nz. All existing and futures names registered under maori.nz will be duplicated under the new SLD māori.nz, we will use a DNAME record in the .nz zone.
Although the DNAME record has been standard for more than 10 years, we want to make sure domains under māori.nz will work properly. To do so, we have prepared a test page that will let us find out the level of DNAME support among cache resolvers.
We kindly ask you to visit http://www.te-reo.maori.dns.net.nz to help us with the testing process. We will collect visits to the page and DNS queries for particular names and correlate them to identify the number of resolvers supporting the DNAME record. Feel free to share this link with anybody, including other suitable mailing lists.
If you find any issue, have comments or suggestions, please let us know.

DNSSEC

Over the last few months we have been working in the test environment on the technical elements of signing the .nz zone. Internal testing has been carried out using Open DNSSEC, which enables easier management of cryptographic key material and operations relating to DNSSEC. The timeline for this project is being put together and will be announced soon. If you would like any more details or would like to be involved in the DNSSEC project please contact our DNS specialist, Sebastian (sebastian@nzrs.net.nz)

SRS EPP Changes

Over the last 12 months we have been working on implementing an EPP interface to the SRS. There has been a change to the original plan to have an EPP proxy for registrars to use to talk to the SRS. After getting feedback from registrars and looking at the solution in detail, it was determined that whilst this was a good solution for NZRS, it would be harder on registrars.

So it has been decided to bring the EPP proxy into the SRS. In order to do this the SRS data model needs to be enhanced to provide EPP support and maintain backwards compatibility for those registrars that do not want to use EPP.  Also EPP style contact object management and message polling will be available though SRS transactions in addition to being available via EPP transactions using the EPP proxy. The EPP proxy will be standards compliant, with no .nz-specific extensions.
The EPP interface and the new SRS transactions are optional and registrars can continue to use their normal set of SRS transactions if they wish to do so. Registrars that want to use EPP can move to a native EPP solution, or access EPP style functionality using the SRS XML interface.

It is planned that a beta EPP interface will be available on the test system by April 2010 with a subset of the EPP functionality and then regular incremental releases to the test system through to June with additional functionality. At this stage we are planning to have the interface implemented on the production system by July 2010. If registrars want to be involved earlier, then an Alpha release of the SRS protocol can be provided now. Please contact NZRS if you require any more information or would like to be involved in early testing of the EPP interface.

NZRS are fully committed to maintaining the existing SRS XML interface and there are no plans to replace it.

19 Mar 2010    Customer Satisfaction Survey Results

Every two years NZRS conducts a survey of registrars to measure satisfaction with our services and to help us plan future developments.  Participation is generally good but this year with the increased prizes on offer has been exceptional and we wish to thank all those that generously gave of their time to participate.

The results are again very good with satisfaction rating of over 90%.  We also have considerable information on our services and planned developments that will help us improve further.  We should also like to thank those of you that took the time to provide comments, which were extensive, as they give us significant insight into your requirements.

For the first time we are publishing our results, in an aggregated and anonymised form.  None of the comments are included to ensure that no respondents can be identified.

if you wish to comment on this survey or the issues raised by it then please feel free to contact Jay Daley, our Chief Executive, on jay@nzrs.net.nz or +64 4 931 6977.

01 Dec 2008    Update - .nz name server ns7.dns.net.nz

New Zealand Registry Services (NZRS) is pleased to announce that the authoritative name server NS7.DNS.NET.NZ for the .nz Domain Name System (DNS) has been replaced.

The replacement is part of a wider project aimed at improving the .nz DNS infrastructure. There is no impact on the .nz DNS as a result of the change and the new IP address for NS7.DNS.NET.NZ is 202.46.188.130.

Over the last few weeks the NZRS, a subsidiary company of Internet New Zealand, has worked on the changes. The NS7 authoritative .nz name server was previously operated by Telecom.

Bringing the server under NZRS’ control will lead to greater reporting and monitoring of the .nz name servers. It will also enable the smoother addition of servers to other parts of the network, if required.

NZRS General Manager Nick Griffin thanks Telecom for its solid management of the .nz name server to-date.

“The new server uses a technology called Anycast, where multiple servers respond to the same IP address, resulting in faster query times. It adds additional robustness and offers better resistance to large-scale denial of service attacks,” he says.

The NZRS operates and manages the registry of .nz domain names and the operation of the Domain Name System (DNS) in the .nz domain name space.

21 Nov 2008    General Manager Nick Griffin will be leaving NZRS

Announcement by Anne Urlwin - Chairman NZ Registry Services:

Nick Griffin has advised that he will be leaving the company after 6 1/2
years. His departure date is the end of January 2009, but he has agreed to
the Board's request that he will continue to be available, if required, to
assist in the transition over the months of February and March.

Nick has led the company from its inception, through to it becoming a very
stable supplier of key infrastructure to New Zealand.
During the early days of the company, Nick was heavily involved in the
setting up of the company, the implementation of the Shared Registry System
(SRS) and the transfer of the registry. Since those early days, Nick has
worked tirelessly leading his team and suppliers to continually improve the
SRS and DNS, this has resulted in the very impressive systems stability,
availability and response times that we have recorded across his term of
leadership.
Some of the key measures that NZRS has achieved under Nick’s guidance
include:
-    NZRS has achieved the highest levels of System Performance and
System Availability for the SRS and DNS.
-    Customer Satisfaction levels over 95%
-    The implementation of robust Business Continuity processes and
procedures that are ingrained into the day to day operation.
-    Impressive financial results: including growing revenues, managed
expenses and increasing dividends

These results can be seen on the NZRS website and the NZRS Annual Reports.

28 Oct 2008    Update - .nz name server ns4.dns.net.nz

New Zealand Registry Services (NZRS) is pleased to announce that the authoritative name server for the .nz Domain Name System (DNS) has been replaced.

The replacement is part of a wider project aimed at improving the .nz DNS infrastructure. There is no impact on the .nz DNS as a result of the change and the new IP address for NS4.DNS.NET.NZ is 202.46.189.130.

Over the last few weeks the NZRS, a subsidiary company of Internet New Zealand, has worked on the changes. The authoritative .nz name server was previously operated by TelstraClear.

Bringing the server under NZRS' control will lead to greater reporting and monitoring of the .nz name servers. It will also enable the smoother addition of servers to other parts of the network, if required.

NZRS General Manager Nick Griffin thanks TelstraClear for its solid management of the .nz name server to-date.

"The new server uses a technology called anycast, where multiple servers respond to the same IP address, resulting in faster query times. It adds additional robustness and offers better resistance to large-scale denial of service attacks," he says.

The NZRS operates and manages the registry of .nz domain names and the operation of the Domain Name System (DNS) in the .nz domain name space.

28 Feb 2008    Update - .nz name server ns7 and ns3

NS7 has been updated from a NZRS operated unicast name server to an anycast name server service hosted and managed by Autonomica with multiple overseas locations.

NS3 hae been updated from a NZRS operated unicast name server to a NZRS operated anycast name server service with two servers located in Wellington and Auckland.

13 Jun 2007    NZ offers IPv6 connectivity

NZRS (.nz Registry Services) announces that a core component of the New Zealand Internet infrastructure is being geared up to accommodate huge potential increases in the number of networked devices connected to the Internet.

"Mobile phones are becoming common Internet devices and many other mobile and specialist devices from security systems to home automation will require connectivity in the future. It is preferable that each computer or device connected to the Internet has a unique addressing number," says NZRS general manager Nick Griffin.

The key to increasing capacity is the introduction of IPv6, the next generation Internet Protocol. IPv6 uses 128 bits for its computer addresses, a huge leap from the 32 bits used in the existing IPv4. This means 340 billion billion billion billion addresses can be covered by IPv6, compared to 4.3 billion for IPv4. Note the population of the world is approximately 6.6 billion.

NZRS is today pleased to announce that the .nz name servers are now operating with IPv6 connectivity in what can be regarded as the first phase of the .nz IPv6 rollout. The name servers are named ns8.dns.net.nz and ns9.dns.net.nz, and are located in Wellington and Albany respectively. Both are connected to the NZ IPv6 Internet Exchange and there is a .nz Whois server accessible at whois.ipv6.srs.net.nz.

NZRS thanks non-profit consortium Open Contributors Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (OCCAID) and US telco Sprint for providing IPv6 tunnels, and thanks Citylink for help in connecting to the NZ IPv6 Internet Exchange.

.nz Registry Services is responsible for operation of the register of domain names and the Domain Name System (DNS) in the .nz domain name space.

29 Mar 2007    .NZ wholesale domain name fee reduction

InternetNZ (The Internet Society of New Zealand) is reducing by 14% the wholesale domain name fee charged to authorised .nz registrars by .nz Registry Services (NZRS).

Colin Jackson, InternetNZ President, says "The InternetNZ Council is pleased to confirm that the wholesale domain name fee will reduce to $1.50 per domain name per month, down from $1.75 per domain name per month.” These figures are exclusive of GST.

The new wholesale fee will apply from 1 July 2007. “We trust that early notification of the lower fee will assist registrars in their planning," says Jackson.

The decision to reduce the fee is the outcome of a joint recommendation from the .nz Oversight Committee (NZOC) and NZRS to the InternetNZ Council.

Dr Frank March, Chair of the NZOC, says he hopes that the lower fee will encourage the continuation of a healthy growth rate in the registration of new domain names. However he cautions “There is no obligation on registrars to pass on any savings they make in a reduction of the wholesale fee.”

Dr March continues “The .nz market is a competitive environment and I hope that the range of authorised registrars will encourage some to reduce the retail price."

The reduction in the wholesale domain name fee is the second drop since NZRS took over running the .nz domain name register in October 2002.

NZRS Chair, Anne Urlwin, says “The result of the fee review is a successful outcome for everyone. We take our responsibilities in managing the .nz register seriously, and are pleased that we've achieved efficiencies in our systems that enable this decrease in the fee to registrars."

24 Mar 2005    IPv6 Glue Announcement

NZRS is pleased to advise that it has added the support of IPv6 glue records to the Shared Registry System (SRS) and DNS. The adoption of IPv6 Glue will bring benefits to the registry in that it will allow for registrants who wish, to start investing in IPv6 technology.

Registrars are now able to provide IPv6 Glue records to the SRS, and this information will be included in the zone files output from the SRS. Note. AAAA (and not A6) records will be published in the zone files.

In order to allow for IPv6 Glue records, the SRS will accept an additional field (IP6Addr) in the definition of a nameserver. It is not a mandatory field. NOTE. If IP addresses are required, there MUST be an IPv4 address provided, not just an IPv6 address.

The full technical details supporting IPv6 Glue records are available here....(pdf)

The enablement of IPv6 is one of the strategic programs that NZRS is undertaking across the next 2 years.
